The Battlemaster subclass does let you add extra damage to your ranged attacks through their special feature called maneuvers, and most of those trigger extra effects like potentially frightening enemies and having a chance to make them drop their weapons. I just don't know how crossbows interact with fighter's multi-attack. A Fighter that focuses on dexterity over strength might be a good choice. It is possible the extra bonus action attacks you would get from dual wielding might not be able to trigger the sneak attack damage if you miss with your first main action attack.Ĭrossbow Expert will be a feat at launch, which might help make dual crossbows effective on other classes. However, Rogues usually rely on their sneak attack feature to do the bulk of their damage, which I think in this game requires an action. I've heard the Thief Rogue subclass works well with dual hand crossbows. I've heard that in early access that Hand Crossbows are a little rarer than other weapons, but I think you can buy a normal one from a vendor in the first major settlement you come across, but you might have to long rest a few times to reset their inventory if it isn't available when you arrive. I don't really know how Monks work at this time, but usually their primary abilities require you to be in melee range, so they might not benefit from that weapon choice that much. That would probably be Rogue, Monk, Ranger, and Fighter. So whatever class you choose should probably be able to make use of a high dexterity stat. Hand crossbows are usable by most classes, and do 1d6+Dex modifier piercing damage.
